The Pump Rod Coupling should be a high quality component that will not fail in service. Too often the view is that "any old coupling will do". This is dangerous thinking as the annoyance caused when a coupling fails is greater than anything else in the entire windmill system.
Couplings available are:-Brass (Hexangonal) Pump Rod Coupling. Galvanised Steel (Hexangonal) Pump Rod Coupling. Wood Rod Coupling. Wood to Steel Coupling. Brass BSP to Whitworth Coupling. Poly Rod Coupling (Male and Female). Poly Rod Adapter. Quick Coupling (to join to the Windmill). These couplings are used to join the Pump Rods, or to join the Pump Rod to the Pump. They are used inside steel column to minimise the wear (rubbing) inside the pipe. Couplings are made from Hexangonal DR (dezincification resistant) Brass. They are available as female/female couplings with Whitworth threads, in sizes 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", & 3/4", 1/2" x 5/8", 1/2" x 3/4", 5/8" x 3/4", 3/4" x 1".

We have been experiencing a high number of failures on a vacuum pump application that includes a C-mount motor/pump alignment, and a Woods #9 SureFlex Coupling with EPDM inserts. There are 4 similar pumps, but only one of them fails repeatedly. Sometimes the teeth strip on one end, sometimes the insert sees a diagonal tear along its circumference. There is no room to perform a laser alignment. Vibration levels are very low, and all the vibration is seen at 1X. We've been putting in a 2-piece coupling insert in recently to make it easier to change. When we strobe the coupling in service, we can see it distorting, and the metal center retaining ring starts to bend off to the size. When we look at the sizing of this coupling, it is borderline #9 and perhaps should rather be a #10. However, none of the other three similarly loaded pumps have these problems with #9's.
